Bahamas is a sovereign independent nation, located in the Atlantic Ocean, southeast of the United States of America and north to east of the Caribbean Sea. It is a former British Colony, gaining independence in 1973. Its political and legal traditions closely follow those of the United Kingdom and the Westminster system. The total area of Bahamas is about 14,000 km2 with an estimated population of 330,000 and its capital is Nassau. The business and official language is English with Bahamian patois is widely spoken.
